공기 여과장비로서 방독면의 얼굴부분에 끼우도록 특별하게 고안되었다. 여과기는 그것을 통해 들어오는 공기로부터 독성 및 자극성 화학증기,가스 그리고 미립 오염물(먼지,냄새,흐림,안개,안개,연기)또는 전쟁에서 사용되는 생물질까지도 모두 제거한다. 여과기는 산업먼지,냄새,흐림,안개,연기 등을 걸러내나 산업형 가스나 증기를 제거하도록 고안되지는 않았다.

Air filtering devices, especially designed to be inserted in the facepiece of the mask. The filters remove from the air passing through them toxic and/or irritating chemical vapors, gases, and particulate contaminants (dusts, fumes, mists, fogs, and smoke), including biological organisms likely to be used in warfare. They may filter industrial dusts, fumes, mists, fogs, and smoke, but are not designed to remove industrial type gases or vapors.
