A spherical piece of metal, carbide, ceramic, plastic or synthetic gem, precision ground and accurate in diameter and sphericity. It is used in conjunction with measuring tools to measure surfaces where rolls or wires will not make contact, such as countersinks, internal grooves, tapered diameters, dovetails, and the like.
