A metal item, cylindrical in shape, open at both ends, with a longitudinal gap in the cylinder wall. In use it is suspended vertically by means of a bracket secured to it at one end. The clapper, which is manually operated, is suspended from the bracket. The item is normally used on shipboard. See also BELL, SHIP'S.
