일반적으로 수정으로 된 투과성 유리로 양 면 백만분의 몇 인치내로 평평하게 갈아서 만든 것으로 단색광원을 이용하여 정밀하 게 마무리된 평면이다. 평면도의 결정이나 기지의 표준치와 비교하여 정밀하게 끝낸 평면의 평행도 및 거리 측정에 사용된다. 사용시는 평면의 기준면은 아래로 하여 측 정 평면 위에 포개어 단색광을 비춰서 평면의 아래 면에서 반사된 빛과 시험 평면에서 반사된 빛사이의 간섭으로 두면 사이의 공기층 두께의 균일도를 점검하게 된다. 제외:OPTICAL PARALLELS

A flat, transparent piece of glass, generally of fused quartz, with one or both principal surfaces polished to within a few millionths of an inch of a true plane. It is used in conjunction with a monochromatic light source to measure the flatness of precision finished surfaces, and to determine the distance and parallelism between precision finished surfaces by comparison with known standards. In operation the flat is superimposed, reference surface downward, on the parts under test and when illuminated by monochromatic light the rays reflected from the reference surface are either reinforced or neutralized by the rays reflected from the surface under test producing interference bands which reveal any variations in the thickness of the film of air between surface under test and the flat.
