한쪽 단부에 자의 나비 밖으로 튀어나온 직각 금속조각이 부착되고 납작하게 담금질 된 강철로 된 눈금이 매겨진 측정기구로서 캘리퍼스나 디바이더를 장치하여 구멍,활자의 허브를 측정하고 만일 자가 측정단에 잘맞는다면 사용자가 볼 수 없는 점들의 사이를 측정하는데 사용된다.

A graduated measuring instrument of flat tempered steel, to one end of which is attached a right angle piece of metal which protrudes beyond the width of the rule. It is used to measure through holes, hubs of pulleys, to set calipers and dividers, and to measure from points where the user cannot see if rule is even with measuring edge.
