드릴링 파이프의 최상단의 줄인데, 회전식 우물파기 기계의 회전기관을 통해 지나가며, 양쪽 끝쪽을 향해 수인치 이내의 범위내 에서 세로로 길게 움직이며 균등하게 간격 이 띠워진 추진 홈이나 평탄부를 이용하여 회전하고 동시에 수직으로 운동할 수 있다.최상단은 통상 어댑터를 이용하여 스윗불의 몸체에 연결 될 수 있도록 좌회전 나선을 갖고있다. 그러나 또한 연결기를 통해 어댑터나 스윗볼에 연결될 수 있도록 우회전 나선을 갖고 있다.

The uppermost joint of a string of drill pipe. It passes through the rotating mechanism of a rotary well drilling machine and may be rotated and simultaneously moved vertically by means of evenly spaced driving flutes or flats running lengthwise to within a few inches of either end. The upper end usually has a left-hand thread for connection by means of an adapter to the body of a swivel, but may also be connected to the adapter or swivel by means of a coupling. The lower end has a right-hand thread for connection to a short length of drill pipe.
