한쌍의 평행한 레일중의 하나를 다른쪽 레일에 적당한 간격을 맞추어서 위치시킬 수 있도록 철도 궤도의 건설에 사용되는 표준거리 측정용 장치. 또한 레일들의 거리를 미리 설계된 거리보다 더 크지도 혹은 작지도 않게 유지하도록 철도 궤도 보수작업에도 사용되어진다.(상부 표면 아레 5/8인치 되는 지점에서 레일의 두부사이를 측정하도록 되어 있음)

A standard measuring device used in the construction of a railroad track to locate properly one of a pair of parallel rails with respect ot the other; also used in maintaining railroad track to determine that the distance between the rails (measured between the heads of the rails at a point 5/8 inch (15.875 millimeters) below the top surface) is not greater or less than a specified distance.
