주위의 기압에 비례해서 수축하기도 팽창하기도 하는 기압민감요소로 구성되어 있는 기압계 형태의 기구이며, 지시기에 결합되어 연결되어 있다. 다이알은 주위의 압력과 고도의 차이를 지시하기 위해서 길이치수(피트, 메타등)의 단위와 압력치수(평방인치당 파운드, 수은주의 인치, 밀리바등)의 단위로 눈금이 매겨져 있다.

A barometric type instrument consisting of a pressure-sensitive element which contracts or expands in proportion to atmospheric pressure, connected through a linkage to a pointer. Its dial is graduated in units of linear measurement (feet, meters, and the like) and units of pressure measurement (pounds per square inche, inches of mercury, milibars, and the like.) to indicate both atmospheric pressure and differences of elevation.
