파이프속을 흐르는 액체의 양을 측정하는 기구이며 액체 속도에 영향을 주는 차량압 력에 기초하고 있으며 측정치는 수은이나 기름이 차있는 벨이나 풀무 따위에 연결되 어 있는 지시기로 눈금자에 나타나게 되어 있다. 여기에는 자체내부에 통합 총계 등록기가 있는 것도 있고 없는 것도 있다.

An instrument designed to measure the rate of flow of a fluid through a pipeline, based on the exact relation which differential pressure bears to fluid velocity, and this measurement indicated on a graduated scale by a pointer directly connected to a mercury or oil sealed bell or a bellows. It may or may not have a totalizing integrator register built in. Excludes: METER, FLOW RATE INDICATING; METER, FLUID FLOW INDICATING, ELECTROMAGNETIC; and METER, FLUID FLOW INDICATING, ULTRASONIC.
