분리 가능한 휴대용 잠금장치,체인이나 U- 자형 꺽쇠에 결합하여 열려지게 된 쇠고리 나 활 모양고리가 있다. 잠겼을 때는 이 쇠고리나 활모양 고리는 쇠고리에 노치가 들 어가는 스프링 구동핀들이 있어서 잠금이 안전하게 된다.잠금은 한개 또는 여러개의 열쇠를 넣어서 돌리거나 단지 열쇠를 넣음 으로써,또는 조합형 자물쇠의 다이얼을 먼 저 맞추어 놓음으로써 열려지게 되어있다. (여러가지 자물쇠에 맞는)맞 열쇠로도 열려지는 두개 이상의 자물쇠통에 대한 것은"자물쇠통 세트(PADLOCK SET)"를 참조한다.

A detachable portable fastening device, having a shackle or bow adapted to be opened for engagement through a staple or the link of a chain. The bow or shackle, when locked, is secured in the case by means of a spring-activated pin(s) entering a notch(es) in the shackle. The lock may be opened by inserting and turning a key or keys, by key insertion only, or by a predetermined setting on the dial of a combination lock.
