교환시설을 갖는 전화업무 취급소로써,교환국이 설치된 지역내에서 한 가입자동전화기를 그 지역의 다른 가입 자동전화기와 연결하여 준다. 교환기는 가입전화기 다이얼로 부터 오는 전류 펄스들에 의하여 작동된다.이 교환국은 보통 다른 지역의 전화기와 연결시키기 위해 타지역 교환국과 간선시설을 갖춘다.교환국은 동일한 국명을 갖는 국부선들의 업무를 제공하는데 필요한 모든 장비를 보유하며, 특수한 업무를 제공하기 위하여 수동식 교환대가 보유될 수도 있다.교환국에서 가입전화기로 연결된 외부선은 이 교환국에 포함되지 않는다.

A telephone office having switching facilities for connecting any dial telephone station within its office area to any other telephone station within the area. The switching mechanism is actuated by current pulses from the telephone station dial. It generally has trunking facilities to other central offices for making connections to telephone stations in those offices. The central office includes all equipment required to serve the station lines having a common office name and may include a manual switchboard for certain types of services. Does not include the outside lines from the central office to the telephone station.
