전극 사이에서 나오는 파열 방전 전기, 즉 불꽃을 이용하여 스위치나 방아쇠 역할을 하는 것이다. 전극사이의 절연질(주로 공기임)은 불꽃이 지난후 자동적으로 다시 채워진다. 방호장치로서 사용되는 불꽃갭은 "피뢰기,전기서어지용(ARRESTOR,ELECTRICAL SURGE)"을 참조한다. 완전한 변조기능을 수행하는 관련 회로망을 가진 품목은 "변조기,레이더용(MODULATOR,RADAR)"을 참조한다.

An item designed to act as a switching or triggering device by means of a disruptive discharge of electricity (a spark) between the electrodes. The insulation (usually air) between the electrodes is self-restoring after passage of the spark. For spark gaps used as a protective device, see ARRESTER, ELECTRICAL SURGE.
